Grass-roots movements grow when need arises
• COUNCILLOR Paul Braithwaite should listen to his voters rather than brand his own constituents “vigilantes” simply because he disagrees with their protests (Crime victims’ action group branded ‘vigilantes’, April 24).
The councillor places too much faith in the “approved, mature and experienced” structures already in place.
He must realise that it is the daily experience of his constituents that bodies such as the Safer Neighbourhoods Partnership are failing his voters. Grass-roots organisations such as the Cantelowes Residents Taking Action group only arise when people feel desperate and when the bodies charged with protecting their interests are failing them. There is no other reason. We know this ourselves on the nearby Maiden Lane estate where we suffer from the same drug dealing and lawlessness as Camden Square. Cllr Braithwaite has even flown in the face of the interests of his constituents on our estate by proposing that money be raised for the council by bulldozing up to 215 homes and forcing these decent families to look elsewhere for somewhere to live.
When the next local elections take place and the councillor is asking for our votes once more no doubt we, his constituents, will find a way to show our displeasure at his actions.
