Give back our paths and parks!
• WHY does Camden Council supinely accede to the police’s demands to close paths and parks, generally without any sort of statistical evidence being produced?
These are really interesting and useful cut-throughs away from traffic. Examples are Pleasant Row off Camden High Street, the path round the back of the old Kentish Town South Underground (Cash Converters) in Kentish Town Road, and the latest victim is the lovely St James’ Gardens between Hampstead Road and Cardington Street.
This was a really useful route from the bus stop outside the old National Temperance hospital and Euston station, and I used it frequently for 20 years and never encountered anti-social behaviour.
We now have the ridiculous situation where Camden residents pay to clean, maintain and light paths and parks but we’re not allowed to use them. We had to fight hard to stop the route between Farrier Street and Clarence Way being locked, Camden were going to fix a lock to the gateway, and now due to the through flow of people there is no evidence of anti-social activities. Give us our paths and parks back!
