Build homes, not a laboratory
• I ATTENDED one of the “meet-and-greet” sessions organised by the Medical Research Council and their supporting organisations and, frankly, it was of little use since a lot of local people and shop keepers and businesses were not advised of the sessions and in any case they were held at times when few could go because of work etc, 2pm-5pm!
Few local people I knew were there. As a ward councillor I still oppose the creation on that site (Brill Place) of a medical research centre and will go on doing so.
I still think the land is needed desperately for housing and leisure facilities; I am really worried about possible emissions of pathogens into the atmosphere in a heavily built-up area; and it is frankly the wrong place to locate it.
I am now demanding that the MRC and their colleagues organise a public meeting at, say, the Camden Centre, as I would expect many more to attend if held in the evening.
We need a debate on the matter. We need to hear from the MRC on our fears and concerns; we need to also hear from the leadership of Camden Council on what they feel about it; and we need a government representative there to tell us why the Prime Minister supported it without seeing the site or talking to local people and councillors.
We need some of us – local residents, ward councillors, the Somers Town People’s Forum, TRA, community and religious leaders – to speak up and say why we don’t want it built there and why it should be located in the open countryside.
We don’t want a medical research centre on our land. We want more council homes and we want more leisure facilities there. MRC – will you convene this public meeting, please?
