Heathside on a high in opener
TOP athletes from London Heathside got their Southern League campaign off and running on Saturday at Parliament Hill Fields. Among the top performers in the Division Three fixture was John Flahive, who showed great endurance as he finished third in both the 800m and the 1500m, before winning the ‘B’ team steeplechase.
Team-mate Paul Lemmon (pictured) also did well over the distance events as he powered his way to a second place finish in the 5000m and won the ‘A’ team steeplechase.
Heathside were just as impressive in the field with Emmanuel Stasaitis finishing second in the long jump, the high jump and the triple jump.
Nathan Cyrus was also in commanding form, winning the ‘B’ team shot putt, while finishing second in the pole vault and the javelin, and third in discus.
Overall the Heathside heroes finished the afternoon on 99 points, taking runners-up spot behind St Mary’s Richmond.
Highgate Harriers started their Southern League Division One season in style. Despite having no specialist throwers, they finished second thanks to a series of creditable performances on the track and in the jumps.
