‘Ivor way for classical music to bring people together’

Conductor of New Journal-sponsored concert has plan for schools programme

A PIONEERING conductor paved the way for a classical music renaissance in South End Green with a fundraising gala on Saturday.
Ivor Setterfield, who famously taught a council estate to sing, wowed the audience at All Hallows Church in Savernake Road with a programme of modern American pieces performed by the New London Singers.
The star of Channel 5’s reality TV show Singing Estate said: “Classical music can be enjoyed by absolutely everyone, people just need more exposure to it.”
In candle-lit surroundings, the concert – sponsored by the Camden New Journal – traced a journey from dawn to night and birth to death, ending with Whiteacre’s composition for John F Kennedy’s funeral.
Hundreds of pounds were raised for the Marie Curie Hospice in Lyndhurst Gardens.
Mr Setterfield hopes the concert will be the first of many.
With the help of the South End Green Association, the Kentish Town conductor is raising money for a musical programme in the area.
Association chairman Pam Gilby said: “With Arts Council and Camden Council backing, Ivor would be able to go into schools with members of his orchestra and the New London Singers to do workshops and then hold free concerts.
We want to provide entertainment that will bring the community together.”
Mr Setterfield said: “Singing is a wonderful experience, but it’s also a great way to meet like-minded people.”
