Flats stall over safety ‘marshals’
CONTROVERSIAL plans to build a seven-storey complex of flats next to a Kentish Town park stalled this week over fears that massive service charges would make the “affordable housing” element too expensive. Proposals to build a 48-apartment block in Dalby Street, next to Talacre Gardens, were awaiting the rubber stamp from the Town Hall on May 22 after months of protests and a public inquiry.
But the development has been knocked off the agenda while the council checks details.
It is understood that doubts have emerged over the feasibility of the scheme to include 19 affordable flats – a key element of a deal in which the council gave the developers land.
The plans were only given initial approval on condition that developers pay for traffic marshals to ensure safe pedestrian access to Talacre Sports Centre.
Protesters estimate the cost of the marshals at £140,000 a year, or £60 per flat per week.
