Peter Deed points to the empty frame where he hopes a picture of Father Page might soon appear
A Page is missing from church history
ALONG a small corridor in a Camden Town church hang a row of photographs dating back to 1881, when the church was opened. Every priest to have graced the altar at St Michael’s Church, in Camden Road, is up there – all except one, that is.
Father Alan Page, who led the flock for 25 years until the mid-1990s, is missing.
Not for want of looking. Church Guardian Peter Deed – who says he has searched almost everywhere – cannot find a picture of the priest, who has since moved to Wales. “Whether he is one of those people who is camera shy, I don’t know,” said Mr Deed. “But we have all the photos of all the priests since 1881, right up to Father Nicholas [who left earlier this year], and we don’t have one of Father Alan Page. It is strange.”
He added: “It would complete the whole picture – it looks silly having all these framed pictures and one frame doesn’t have anything in it.”
Mr Deed, who used to work at the International School in Regent’s Park and lives in Delancey Street, Camden Town, has been a member of the congregation for more than 10 years ago.
He said the church is a hub of the community which – until Father Nicholas left – held activities for the whole area, including a Bengali music group and a homeless shelter. Their new priest, Father Philip North from Walsingham, Norfolk, is expected to join in October . “It’s extremely good,” he said of St Michael’s. “We have a good record of community work – and this is a good part of local history.”
He added: “Father Page was a very nice guy who did a lot of work with the Boy Scouts. If anybody has a photo of him and would be happy to let us use it, we’d be extremely grateful.”
