A LOCUM doctor at one of the surgeries taken over by the American health giant UnitedHealth in April has lost the battle to keep her job. Dr Alison Buchanan left the Camden Road Surgery on Friday after 18 years’ loyal service.
She was told to leave weeks after UnitedHealth, the British wing of America’s largest health corporation, took control of the surgery.
Dr Buchanan was this week out of work and “distraught” according to her husband, Dr John Horton, a partner at the Park End surgery in South End Green.
He said: “It has all ended. She has been given the boot, so to speak. She’s upset because she did not even get the chance to say goodbye to her patients. That is the saddest thing about it.”
The British Medical Association, the doctors’ union, confirmed they were taking up Dr Buchanan’s case. A spokeswoman said replacement locum staff had been found.
She added: “Although there have been some staff changes at the Camden Road Surgery, we are delighted that, including the teams UnitedHealth UK is now working with at King’s Cross and Brunswick surgeries, the vast majority of eligible doctors, nurses and support staff have opted to stay with us.”
