Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 5 June 2008

Square hit

• VANDALS have struck in Tavistock Square, Bloomsbury, just as preparations are being finished for its opening in connection with Open Garden Squares Weekend June 7 and 8.
Margaret Brett, founder of the Friends of Tavistock Square, and responsible for the square joining the scheme for the first time, was so distressed.
She reported the damage to Camden Council early on Sunday morning June 1.
There is no special warden at the garden but the council responded within the hour, removing broken glass from the path.
Philip Nelson, Friends’ chairman, is in contact with the council hoping to have an important plaque mended and restored and graffiti removed from the statue of Gandhi, a central feature of the Square.
From the nature of the graffiti it would appear that teenage girls could be responsible for the damage and possibly in association with the hooliganism on the underground on Saturday night.
Special events in Tavistock Square on Saturday June 7 include a self-guided tour of the historical monuments and a children’s art competition with prizes for all.
