Camden New Journal - by RICHARD OSLEY

Let’s face it... En-ger-land’s top players have failed us

HERE are a few new rituals developing at Arsenal’s new Emirates Stadium, now two seasons old. First, Tomas Rosicky watches every match from the sidelines. Second, 80 per cent of the crowd, regardless of how many pounds they have spent on getting in, leave 15 minutes before the end, missing the last-minute equaliser.
And third – and this happens at every single match – the away fans, without fail, try to jeer the Arsenal support with a chant that goes something like this: En-ger-land, En-ger-land, En-ger-land (repeat).
The flimsy idea behind the taunt is that Arsenal should somehow be ashamed of their free-flowing football because only Theo Walcott was born and bred in the country. Blah blubber blather blah blubber.
Who cares?
As Chelsea proved in such dismal style this season, stuffing your team with England internationals like Frank Lampard, Ashley Cole and John Tear-ry isn’t the greatest idea after all.
Singing ‘En-ger-land’ as hard as they could, they still ended the season with nothing to show thanks to Captain Marvellous’s outstanding penalty miss (he says he slipped, but if he had properly fallen over he wouldn’t have sent the goalkeeper the wrong way and got as close as hitting the post).
Worse still – the England national team with those same Chelsea heroes and a few Spurs hopefuls who wandered in straight from the Rumbelows Cup final as if it meant they were ready to play international football wrecked all our summers by failing to qualify for the festival of football that kicks of on Saturday night.
Let’s be honest. If they were that good, they would have got us to the European Championships. No wonder, then, that Arsene Wenger hasn’t been so keen to spend millions of pounds on English players in recent years. The regrettable fact (for all of us who would like to see England win something one day) is they haven’t been up to the job, and its Wenger’s foreign stars – Cesc Fabregas, Robin Van Persie and even Phillipe Senderos – who will be fighting it out on the top stage over the next three weeks.
