Out of sight…
• THE letter “Drug users know where the action is” (May 29) clearly hits the nail squarely on the head.
At most times one hardly ever sees any evidence of policing around the drug hotspots of Camden Town, especially during the evenings.
Several times over the last month I have seen dealers openly trading along the canal, Camden Lock, the High Street, Kentish Town Road and even along Camden Road as far up as the CarpetRight store.
I recently saw what I consider a totally inappropriate use of police resources. Four officers grilling, if you will excuse the pun, a hot dog vendor outside the HSBC bank. At that particular time there was clear evidence of dealing along Kentish Town Road together with several illegal minicab drivers touting for business. Where were the boys in blue? Just 50 yards away in the area that I have just mentioned. At one time Brixton was looked upon as the drugs mecca of the capital, now it’s Camden Town.
Owing to mobile phones, dealers can keep abreast of visible policing tactics so on the majority of occasions all they have to do is to walk to an alternative patch and then continue their despicable trade.
Admittedly the police some time ago did have a degree of success in nailing the notorious Mr. Big and his runners who operated from outside Sainsbury’s but, as we all well know, one swallow doesn’t make a summer.
Until such time that our soft legislators really come down heavily on the dealers, I cannot see much improvement happening.
