Forget the West End, here’s the Roundhouse
• SIR Jonathan Miller’s latest complaint is that he cannot bring his new production of Hamlet, with unknown ex-Bristol Old Vic graduate Jamie Ballard “moving, sexy and sensitive” in the title role, into a West End theatre (The Times, June 9).
Poor old Jonathan!
He has had such a horrible life coping with so many celebrity actors since performing with such success with Alan Bennett, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore in Beyond The Fringe.
Why does he have his sights set so low when the newly-designed Roundhouse is practically next door to where he lives?
If it happens to be too booked up, he could try ringing up his old friend/enemy Sir Peter Hall, who is now running the magical Rose Theatre in Kingston-upon-Thames.
And there is always our beloved Tricycle Theatre in Kilburn, which continues to enjoy a magic all of its own.
Many West End theatres are grotty, rotting and hugely expensive. I cannot see that the attraction exists any more.
Cannot Sir Jonathan take a leaf out of Sir Peter’s book, and remember TS Eliot saying on his death bed that “Old men should be explorers”?
