Vandalising vandalism
• AM I the only person in London who can’t understand all the accolades heaped upon “artist” Banksy?
I read with disbelief the council’s decision to preserve a piece of graffiti on the side of the town hall in case it was vandalised or stolen.
How can you vandalise a piece of vandalism?
Any other graffiti would be erased within days and the perpetrator prosecuted and fined so why not in this case?.
The answer can be summed up in one word, trendy. If you or I were to stencil anything on any piece of public property we would fall foul of the law but sign it Banksy and suddenly it’s a work of art to be revered. Would it still be preserved if it was sprayed onto the side of say Marble Arch or Nelson’s Column? No. So why is it ok everywhere else? Graffiti is ugly where ever it is or whoever the artist is.
There is a place for art if that’s what you want to call it but the walls of the environment in which we live isn’t it.
