Sam Mason, says the stumps could become plant pots

PEDESTRIANS have called for the removal of street light stumps they say are cluttering up the pavements of West Hampstead.
Engineers took down the lighting columns and installed temporary ones after routine tests about six months ago. But the column stumps were left.
West Hampstead Amenities and Transport committee chairwoman Virginia Berridge said: “These ugly old stumps on the side of the road covered in sticky tape don’t improve the appearance of the area.”
Taxi co-ordinator Shaheed Dar, 43, said of the stump outside the minicab office in Mill Lane where he works: “It doesn’t look nice and it should have gone long ago.”
All 9,800 lighting columns in Camden have been tested and 5 per cent have been cut down.
But Sam Mason, 24, who works in Mill Lane, believes the stumps could still have a role. She said: “They could cut them down, hollow them out and they would make rather nice plant pots. You could get children involved in the planting. That would brighten up the street no end.”
A council press official said: “We are going to decide what to do with the stumps area by area. We’ve completed the testing and we’re moving forward with what to do next.”
