Sweets, but a bitter taste over closure
FIFTEEN minutes before closing forever, the queue inside the Englands Lane post office was as long as usual.
Pensioners, students and mothers with buggies paid their last visit to the counter patiently waiting to be served at the counter.
The only sign it was the final hour of operation was the sweets being handed out to customers as a little celebration. The confectionary may have raised a smile but the comments in the queue were downhearted.
“My mum is old and can’t even manage the housework,” said Neville Salmon, who lives nearby. “I don’t even want to think about what we’ll do now.”
A bid to stop the closure had been mounted by the Primrose Gardens Community Association on the grounds that it would hit those who used it the most: the elderly, disabled and those with young children.
Hal Studdert, another one of the final customers, lamented: “An awful lot of people and shops use this post office, and now the nearest one is in Regent’s Park Road. There are nasty steps there, and no public transport. It’s just not accessible.”
Down the queue a bit, Christine Christen added: “The Post Office is guilty. It’s like gross misconduct.”
