What to call the square?
• VITAL information for all those campaigning to change the projected name of Noho Square and other public places has been issued by the Westminster City Council planning and city development department.
This states that under the London Buildings Act the council has to approve names chosen by developers who have to apply to the council for this. With respect to Noho Square, “none has been submitted” by Candy & Candy, the developers, so far. Once this has been done the application has to be publicised widely so that local people and community amenity societies can make their views known. Ray Gangadeen of their central area planning team is dealing with this aspect of the inquiry.
It is to be hoped that people concerned about the inappropriate proposal “for marketing purposes” of Noho Square, will write to Candy & Candy, as well as to Ray Gangadeen about this, with their own preferred names.
Mine is for Nightingale Square, as Florence was at the Middlesex Hospital, and because an alternative, Fitzrovia, is rather anglo-centric and elitist for our pleasantly diverse local cultural community.
