Highgate struggle on wet pitch

A DISMAL batting performance saw Highgate slump to a second successive defeat on Saturday in the Third Division of the Middlesex County Cricket League.
Skipper Dave Benton continued his hot streak with the toss, and with Tony Duckett returning from injury Highgate fielded first. Duckett and Phil Brown both bowled well from the off, with the Kenton batsmen struggling on the wet pitch.
Brown made the initial breakthrough, before Jim Denning snapped up two catches at third slip off Duckett. Highgate continued to work hard in the field, and Brown picked up two more victims, courtesy of catches by Sam Joseph and Zac Curtis. Duckett went on to claim the wicket of danger man Sachin Patel for 46, as Kenton were dismissed for 139 in the 51st over.
In reply Highgate openers Jake Sharland and Matt Holly managed just eight and 10 runs respectively, while Jim Denning only added a further four runs before losing his wicket. The only real notable score for the visitors came from Curtis, who hit a patient knock of 46. In the end Highgate could only muster 110 in reply, handing Kenton a 29-run victory.
In Division Two, South Hampstead also suffered a slip in their title charge after narrowly losing away at Shepherds Bush.
The visitors opted to bowl first and put in a resilient display as they restricted Shepherds Bush to 119 from 45 overs.
It was a target South Hampstead rarely looked like reaching, as they managed just 106 from 37 overs before the fall of their final wicket.
Hampstead moved up into fourth spot in Division One with a commanding seven-wicket victory over Winchmore Hill. Hampstead put in an impressive fielding display to restrict their opponents to 131 all out in 57.5 overs. Hosts Hampstead went on to record their fourth win of the season in style as they raced to 136-3 from 34.3 overs.
