Not so much an Ealing Comedy, more a…
• YOUR film critic Dan Carrier has got his knickers in quite a twist by referring to Alastair Sim (left) as “the Ealing Studios star who appeared in such classics as Whiskey Galore and The Lady Killers” (Fitting tributes to comedy stars, July 24).
Sim was neither in Whisky Galore (no ‘e’ in Whisky, Dan, that’s Irish, not Scotch), nor in The Ladykillers, and to call him an “Ealing Studios star” is quite a stretch. Sim appeared in just one Ealing movie, Hue and Cry, and then only in a supporting role.
Even the usually well-informed John Gulliver seems to have got similarly (ouch!) confused, calling Sim “The Ealing Comedy stalwart”.
Not so much an Ealing Comedy, more a Camden Farce…
