Know about Christ Church?
• I WOULD be interested to hear from anyone who has access to any information on Christ Church, the church that used to be in Chalton Street, Somers Town.
The church and school were paid for, then built for the local people, during the 1800s.
George Moore, who came from Mealsgate (where I now live) in Cumberland, was the benefactor.
I am putting together an archive for our parish about George Moore, who made good in the silk trade, starting in London, and then went on to spread his empire around the world.
A very large amount of the money that he earned was used to help others, mainly children, the poor and the disabled.
I have been trying for more than two years to find someone who may have a picture of the church, or of the school, or some of the history of them both, so that we can add it to the information that we have already archived.
I know that the buildings were bombed during the last war and demolished in the 1950s, but that is all.
He was such a big man in our area that it would be nice to add a little more information to that we already hold.
Perhaps one of your readers can help us.
If you have any photographs I could easily take copies and return them, or perhaps copies could be sent by email to: allhallowscentre@hotmail.co.uk
We would be very grateful for any help.
