Plant life and death
• YEARS ago, when I lived in Denning Road, Hampstead, I planted sunflowers in the dirt patch round a street tree.
The plants grew high and bloomed beautifully. So Camden sent round a man in van with weed killer spray and sprayed them.
Luckily I saw it happen and ran out with a bucket of water to wash off the killer stuff.
“Get your hair cut” was all Camden’s paid vandal could think of to say when I asked why he wanted to kill sunflowers that made the street look nicer.
The plants lived.
So a week later Camden sent round a man in van to spray them again. And this time I didn’t see the official vandalism so couldn’t save them with a bucket of water.
So the plants died.
And from what you tell of the recent plant murder in Gladys Road (Destruction of mini-meadow clears the way for a dogs’ toilet, August 7) Camden is still sending out men in vans who cannot tell the difference between weeds and jolly flowers.
Nothing changes.
