How some smokers take flight by travelling abroad
• MANUEL? He’s from Barcelona.
Just back from a five-day break in Barcelona.
My two friends report a four-hour delay on the outward flight, this together with the two-hour early arrival meant six hours without a cigarette to relieve the stress, and regular announcements on the Manchester Airport public address that there was no smoking anywhere in the airport, and once in the system you cannot leave because of the security and no one to lodge a complaint with, as it is the law.
Despite being on low incomes and having scrimped and saved, they very nearly turned tail. Not reaching the hotel until midnight they were informed all the smoking rooms had gone (they smoked out the window).
After that it was all “fabulous”, a smoking lounge by the restaurant, smoking in bars and cafés, smoking in the streets (which were packed – no doubt with British smokers).
They can’t wait to go there again!
