Be a Gooner – but be a Giver as well!
ARSENAL stars Cesc Fabregas, Manuel Almunia and Faye White were all in the starting XI on Thursday when they turned up at the University College Hospital (UCH) to help kick-off the club’s Charity of the Season. The Gunners launched their ‘Be a Gooner. Be A Giver’ Campaign, which this season aims to raise £300,000 for the Teenage Cancer Trust to help fund an Education Zone within their state-of-the-art day care centre at the hospital in Euston.
The club hopes that other organisations will follow their lead, helping the charity to raise a further £1.2 million to complete the development of the centre, which will be the first of its kind in Europe.
The Education Zone will be a dedicated space where those being treated can keep up with their studies and also learn more about their cancer. The unit will also include computers and laptops with wireless access, enabling patients to contact their school, keep in touch with their friends and even join in with lessons via webcam. Lead singer of The Who, Roger Daltrey, patron of the Teenage Cancer Trust and a dedicated Arsenal fan, said at the launch: “I’m so proud that Arsenal, a life-long obsession of mine, will be supporting the Trust, a cause I have been championing for many years. I can’t think of a better partnership. “Arsenal has shown more commitment to teenagers than any other club in the Premier League, with young players who have set a standard of football way higher than their years. “I know that both Arsenal and all of us fans will really get behind the Teenage Cancer Trust and help make a difference for thousands of young cancer patients.”
