Splash of talent lights up gallery
SHADOWS coming to life, monsters made out of cardboard and trees sprouting through buildings – young minds ran wild when a West Hampstead art gallery opened its studios to the public at the weekend. Art lovers young and old tried their hand at mask-making, printing, ceramics and gigantic animation at Camden Arts Centre in Arkwright Road.
Spiral, a free yearly event, offers tuition from professional artists exhibiting at the centre, where Turner Prize winner Martin Creed was a former artist in residence.
A giant lightbox cast silhouettes as part of the Dark Summer theme of light and dark, poems were indented into trees and then rubbed with crayons and paper and a stage was constructed in the garden for a performance with costumes made by the children.
Organiser Clare Roebuck said: “There’s a lot of talent there. It could be the launch of some careers. You never know.”
