Camden New Journal - Letters to the Editor
Published: 11 September 2008

Criminals tried to use a clone of my store card in Montreal

• THE card cloning scam in Kentish Town (Police set to investigate card cloning from cash machines, September 4) is not limited to ATMs outside supermarkets.
My Marks & Spencer Mastercard was cloned and presented for payment of goods in Montreal, Canada.
I was notified by M&S customer service, and after verifying that I had not been abroad instructed to destroy the card.
My use of the card was confined to M&S, Sainsbury’s and Boots, all in Camden Town, suggesting any or all of the card machines must have been compromised by scanners.
Although the attempted fraud was quickly detected I will think twice about using credit cards in Camden Town in future.
I trust the police will take seriously inquiries into how this type of fraud can be eliminated.
Our local stores will suffer if shoppers go elsewhere.
