Politics of the far right the last thing we need
• REPORTING that the British National Party will be contesting the Hampstead Town by-election on September 25 (Far-right candidate to stand in by-election, September 4) you point out that this marks an unfortunate first for Camden, as the BNP has never previously put up a candidate in the borough.
Of course, the BNP doesn’t have a hope of winning Hampstead Town, but we need to prevent it using the by-election to gain a toehold in Camden.
Camden is a model of London’s successful multi-cultural society, with people of different backgrounds living together in a spirit of toleration and mutual respect. The last thing we need is a loathsome gang of white supremacists trying to poison relations between our borough’s diverse communities.
The overwhelming majority of people in Hampstead reject the politics of the BNP, but in a council by-election the danger is that most of them will not bother to vote.
It is therefore vital to encourage the maximum turnout on September 25, in order to ensure that the BNP candidate receives the derisory percentage of the vote that reflects his party’s actual level of support in the area.
Unite Against Fascism is leafleting Hampstead Town ward to alert voters to the threat posed by the BNP.
