Boxers’ pound for pounds plea

Club’s fighters appeal for sponsors as they look to 2012 Olympics success

COACHES from St Pancras Boxing Club are searching for sponsors to help pack a punch with their London 2012 Olympic hopefuls.
With the buzz of Beijing still around the gym, trainers at the club, which is based in Talacre Road, Kentish Town, are hoping that the prospect of funding future Olympians will prove too good to turn down.
Gym manager CJ Hussein said: “We have a number of talented young boxers at the gym who have the potential to go on and achieve great things within the sport, providing they’re given the chance.
“All of our equipment in the gym has been donated to us, and we only charge the youngsters a couple of pounds to train to help cover costs. We don’t have the money to cover our boxers as much as we’d like to.”
CJ, who is a professional boxer himself, added: “We’re not asking for thousands of pounds, just enough to pay for some extra training equipment and maybe travel expenses.”
The talent within the gym was on show on Thursday when the club held its annual awards ceremony.
More than 20 of the Saints’ stars turned out for the event, alongside special guests Camden mayor Nurul Islam, Councillor Flick Rea, TV actor Simon Greenall and heavyweight boxer John McDermott.
Among the big winners was featherweight Charlie Webb and middleweight Alan Higgins, who won the Best Boxer Trophy in their respective junior and senior ranks.
The Best Fight of the Season awards went to Joe Steven, Colin Moore and Mourad Boudjemma. Middleweight Boudjemma also won the Most Improved Boxer accolade in the senior category alongside Richard McCauley.
Junior fighters Kirron Thomas, Charles Worley and Mohammed Ahmed were praised for their efforts over the past 12 months when they were named most improved boxers of the year.
Meanwhile, Mohammed Ali, Ricky Redhead, Daniel Troy, Steve Cusiak and John Ajay were voted the best up-and-coming boxers.
