Getting to the point

ORGANISERS from Camden Fencing Club are inviting youngsters from across the borough to sign up ahead of the new season and help turn the coming year into the biggest in the club’s history.
Based at Acland Burghley School in Tufnell Park, the club has gone from strength to strength since opening its doors eight years ago.
It now boasts 120 members aged between seven and 17 years, ranging from beginners to national champions, who could even go on to feature in the 2012 London Olympics.
The club also hosts a range of competitions, from grass-roots level to the Camden International Cadet Sabre Tournament. Backed by Greenwich Leisure Ltd, the competition is the only fencing event in Britain featured on the official European Cadet Circuit.
The club is guided by five top coaches, including former British champion Ian Williams, who coached the Great Britain sabre team in the lead-up to the Beijing Olympics.
Club administrator Ronald Velden hopes that the experience of the coaches, along with the club infrastructure, will help to build the sport in the borough.
“The whole emphasis for the club is to offer a community-based programme, designed to provide local children with first class teaching, recreation and, for those with talent, an opportunity to achieve their full potential,” he said.
“London 2012 is the catalyst for sport in this country but if there is to be a legacy then community sports programmes like this are important for the long-term future health of generations of our children.”

Curtis shines in debut senior open

OLYMPIC sabre hopeful Curtis Miller showed a glimpse of things to come when he competed in his first senior competition.
The talented 16-year-old, who lives in Holloway, finished in a respectable 18th position after taking on 128 fencers from across the country at the Hamlet Open in Stratford-upon-Avon on Saturday.
The only representative from Camden Fencing Club, Curtis won all six of his preliminary contests and two matches in the knockout stages before narrowly losing to Thomas Mottershead from Stockport in the final 32.
