Heavy-handed way to treat a veteran fighter
• WHAT has Camden Council come to? The well-known veteran campaigner, Ellen Luby, was physically prevented by a number of security guards from entering the public gallery at the Town Hall.
It is a shame when an 84-year-old who has been in the public gallery observing full council meetings since the 1950s (before many councillors were born) is treated so badly.
The good work that Ellen Luby has done should be remembered. She has helped many people of this borough fight to get housed, has attended many political rallies and this is the heavy-handed treatment dished out to her.
What has happened to freedom of speech and democratic rights? Ellen Luby, like anyone else, has a right to enter the public gallery – that is what the gallery is there for. When Ellen speaks, she states the truth and the truth often hurts; it especially hurts politicians. It was so sad to hear she was physically hurt in the public gallery a year ago. Even if the gallery can be a dangerous place these days, I support her wish to exercise freedom of speech.
If Ellen is not in the public gallery, then who is these days?
