Camden New Journal - Letters to the Editor
Published: 25 September 2008

Opposition to new road

• IT is clear from speaking to staff at the City of London and from closer examination of the “masterplan” that the disputed vehicular access route is in fact to be a construction route to get building vehicles from Gordon House Road to the area close to Highgate Road, by another name (Bitter opposition to new road on Heath, September 11).
There is to be a raft of new buildings, including a new café at this location. But rather than temporarily close the short road between Highgate Road and the site of the present café, passing between the tennis courts, (where most of the proposed new buildings will be erected) the CoL proposes to construct a lorries-only road all the way from Gordon House Road, along the east side of the Heath, past the access footpath from Lissenden Gardens, and right across a cricket pitch. It believes it can do this because the CoL considers the Heath entrance at Gordon House Road to be a back-door that it can use for its lorries, deliveries, and staff cars etc. It wants to do this despite endangering the safety of walkers, children, students, animals, tourists and the elderly. Can you imagine what it will be like approaching the Heath and having to negotiate a lorries only “vehicular access road”? It has already spent £46,300 - according to the Heritage Lottery A great many local people area are opposed to these plans.
