Generation game that’s a ‘perfect night out’
THERE may be more than 60 years difference in age between these two women but they share a common interest: a love of
throwing arrows. At 85, Peggy Dowle, is one of the most experienced players on the Bullseye team, with 45 years of darts under he belt.
Kelly Byrne, 21, is a mere novice in comparison, who has been on the oche since 2006.
But both women are
seriously committed to the sport.
Mrs Dowle, a darts champ who won nine trophies in her time, concedes that while she may not throw the sharpest arrow on the board any more it’s still a “nifty” one.
The grandmother of seven and great-grandmother of four said: “I’ve played darts since 1963 and I’m still playing. I enjoy it and I’m going to play as long as I can. In fact, the girls won’t let me leave. It’s a good night out, you get amongst your friends and have a nice evening.”
Meanwhile, Mrs Byrne admits she gets odd looks from her friends when she talks about her weekly attempts to hit a double top with the Bullseye ladies. “When I tell my mates they tell me it’s for old people,” says Mrs Byrne, a mother of two from the Clarence Way estate in Camden Town. “I’m young but I get on with older people – I just think I’m sitting with the girls.”
Introduced to the pub game two years ago by a family friend, she says it’s the perfect week night out and called for other young people to take up the arrows. “I’ve got two kids and I like a night off for myself,” she said. “I really enjoy darts – I like the game.”
