Prize-winner Alan Dallman
Judges’ double-take over twin marrow
A TWIN marrow took its place among gardeners’ finest exhibits at Highgate Horticultural Society autumn show on Saturday. The marrow was a winner for society chairman Alan Dallman in the strangest-looking vegetable category. Exhibitor Gary Sycamore, a society member for almost 20 years, was the star of the show at Victoria Hall in Highgate as he collected five trophies and a certificate of merit.
He said: “I was particularly pleased to do well in floral classes as I normally grow more vegetables than flowers. I was delighted to win the best exhibit in the floral class for my vase of gladioli. They appeared just in time for the show.”
Marion Wilton took the Gibbon Award for most points in fruit classes and the DJ Hawkins Bowl for most points in decorative classes. Patrick Roberts, Roxane Stirling, Keith Burgess and Michael Donagher all won awards. Youngest winners were Isobel Farmer, who took the Jubilee Cup in the five-years-and-under category, and Clara Boisard, who received the Constance Dains Award for entrants aged six to 10.
Next year, the society and the United Reformed Church in Pond Square are to join forces to celebrate their 150th anniversaries.
