‘For cod’s sake, officer, we’re just trying to have some fun!’
Police step in to break up madcap water slide party over safety fears
A COW was spotted flying down Primrose Hill on Saturday, quickly followed by a giant cod, a rabbit and a hairy man in a tight-fitting dress – until police intervened.
The strange happenings were part of an impromptu water slide party organised by on-line outdoor team Lost and Found. The motley collection of people liaise via the net to bring avant garde laughs and performance art to the streets and parks of London.
But the fun was brought to an abrupt halt when police officers demanded it ended.
The group had set up a giant water slide on Primrose Hill, using 100ft of plastic sheeting, buckets of water and bottles of washing-up liquid. Fuelled by cans of beer, thrill-seekers launched themselves from the heights of the hill and flew down towards London Zoo at high speed.
New Journal food writer Clare Latimer watched the proceedings. She said: “There was a big gang of twentysomethings, all done up in outrageous fancy dress, careering down the slope at top speed.”
Despite the fun Ms Latimer said she believed some passers-by were concerned for their safety.
She added: “After a while, people were getting in each other’s way and it seemed a miracle no one was really hurt.”
After around an hour, police officers appeared. One onlooker said: “A parent of a toddler who was at the bottom watching what was going on got fretful.
“Officers didn’t know what to think, but the gang, after some brief and unsuccessful pleading to be allowed to have another go, rolled up the plastic sheet and went.”
Lost and Found run a website on which they promote one-off special events.
No one from the group was available for comment, but a message on their website reads: “Lost and Found’s aim is to be a catalyst for interaction and fun.
“The things we do are directed by a desire to release people from overactive self-awareness.”
A spokesperson for The Royal Parks said: “Behaviour which interferes with the safety and enjoyment of other park users is unacceptable.”
A police spokesman said: “The Royal Parks police were informed of an unauthorised event taking place in Primrose Hill and, having spoken to the organisers, the crowd was dispersed.” |
