Double blow for plucky Phoenix

CHAMPIONS Reddot maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a hard fought victory over title rivals Phoenix in Division One.
The Dots made a bright start to the game and took the lead when Jon Dowsett chipped the goalkeeper from the edge of the box. Phoenix were then dealt a devastating blow when captain John Paul damaged his ankle, an injury that led to the match being delayed for 40 minutes and the player being taken to hospital.
Within minutes of the restart Phoenix hit back to level the scores when James Cole escaped his marker in the box to head home a mammoth throw-in from Dean Humphreys.
The Bill Price Cup winners looked to have taken the lead just before the break when Ricky Lucas raced clear and slotted the ball past Reddot keeper Jimmy Russell, but the celebrations were short lived as the referee ruled the goal out for offside.
Both teams continued to press for a winner. And with 20 minutes left it was Reddot who made the all-important breakthrough when a neat passing move between substitute Jason Medford and Paul Reid ended with Jon Dowsett grabbing his second of the game.
Inspired by man-of-the-match Liam Barnabie, Reddot went on to seal a flattering 4-1 victory. Medford added a crucial third, before John Donovan scored the goal of the game with a spectacular bicycle-kick.
Cobden Athletic are three points behind Reddot with a game in hand after clinching a narrow 1-0 win over Consitution. The winning goal came midway through the first-half when Oliver Riley’s pass released Ryan Harley, who squeezed his shot just past the onrushing keeper. Cobden missed the chance to double their lead when Chris Knott saw his penalty saved.
In the only other top flight game Moorehouse twice came from behind for a thrilling 3-3 draw against CS Maritimo.
In Division Two, newcomers Sir Robert Peel made it three wins out of three with a 4-0 victory over Hornsey at Regent’s Park.
James Lindsay bagged a brace, while a Mark Dawson penalty and a thunderbolt from Dean Crawford sealed the win to leave Peel five points clear at the top of the table.
Hat-trick hero Joe Thompson led Boston Arms to their first win of the season against Dinamo Dorigo.
Two goals from George Carrol and a strike from Jack Shepherd completed the rout as Boston ran out 6-0 winners.
Surreal Madrid boasted four different scorers as they kicked off their campaign with a comfortable three points against Mayville.
Taff Manton, Matt Rooney, Andy Davis and Martin Lightbody all got on the score-sheet as Madrid recorded a 4-0 victory.
It was the perfect send-off for Derek “Del” Siddle, one of Surreal Madrid’s greats who announced his retirement before the game.
The only other Division Two game saw AFC Shooters and MDM battle out a 2-2 draw.
Lord Tredegar are top in Division Three following their third successive win of the season.
This time the league newcomers beat the Mayville “B” team 2-0, meaning they have already scored 20 goals this season.
Elsewhere FC Bertoli beat Crouch End Rangers 3-2 in a five-goal thriller, River Fleet scored seven against Tevekkeli and the Surreal Madrid “D” team netted a narrow
1-0 win over Enate United.
