Halloween warning: Police ban sale of eggs and flour
SHOPKEEPERS are battening down the hatches in Kentish Town and refusing to sell eggs and flour to would-be trick-or-treaters.
The ban follows police advice about the possible risk of Halloween disturbances across the borough tomorrow night (Friday).
Police are urging parents to make sure trick or treating does not run late into the night and neighbourhood officers have been hauled in for extra patrols and night shifts.
Nazir Khan of Everbest Food and Wine in Kentish Town Road told how police dropped off a leaflet at the shop asking staff not to sell eggs and flour.
He added: “We haven’t sold them to youngsters in the past two or three years because we’ve had enough trouble. Kids have chucked eggs against our shop window before – which they might have even bought at our store.”
Alex Koroma, store manager at Somerfield, said: “Kids won’t be able to buy eggs and flour at our shop. It’s not a police-enforced initiative for us. Our stores all have that regulation.”
Mr Koroma told how teenagers have been rude when they were not sold their ammunition”. He added: “Halloween should be fun, and they are turning it into something bad.”
Veysel Guzel, owner of Guzel’s International Food Centre, finds the clampdown on pranks “a bit over the top”.
He said: “Eggs and flour are not harmful – they are foods. I can’t just stop selling them to children because who am I to say they will be throwing them? They might just want to bake a lovely pumpkin pie.”
Police are bracing themselves to counter crime or anti-social behaviour across the borough.
Camden Town Inspector Taylor Wilson said: “Throwing things is not a tradition – but simply yobbish behaviour.”
He added that police are also advising parents to escort their children and make sure they get to bed early. “Halloween is supposed to be an early evening celebration and should not go well into the night,” he said.
