Make a meal of it! Fawlty Towers actor in BBC Radio 2 row opens brand new hospital restaurant

¡OLé! Fawlty Towers actor Andrew Sachs is snapped managing a smile on Thursday despite a distressing week at the centre of the BBC’s prank call scandal involving Hampstead comedian Russell Brand and his friend Jonathan Ross.
Mr Sachs was at the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead to launch a new colour-coded restaurant aimed at showing diners how fatty their meals are.
The veteran actor, who played bumbling Spanish waiter Manuel in the hit comedy, was the victim of lewd messages about his granddaughter left by Brand and Ross on his answerphone and broadcast on Radio 2 last
Saturday.
As his agent took the matter up with the BBC, Mr Sachs kept his appointment with the Pond Street hospital.
The twist in the new-look Foodhouse restaurant is that menus are dressed in traffic light colours. Dishes marked red have a high fat content and more calories, amber have a medium amount, while greens are the healthiest options.
Mr Sachs, who lives in Kilburn, said: “I’m very impressed and happy to be here. I’ve lived in this area since 1943, although at
different addresses.
“I’ve never been to the Royal Free as a patient but I’ve been here as an outpatient visitor. As Manuel would say, ‘Eees very good to have you with you here today... ¡Olé!’.”
Royal Free chief executive Andrew Way said: “The restaurant helps patients, visitors and staff eating here to make choices that promote a healthy lifestyle.”
