Return of Merry Christmas is on cards
IT’S only October – but Conservative councillors are already fretting about what should go into their corporate Christmas cards.
Backbench councillors are calling on the Town Hall to use the words “Merry Christmas” in all cards sent out over the festive period. For the past two years, cards have been marked with “Seasons Greetings”.
So serious are Tory worries about how to phrase their messages, they are laying down a motion at Monday’s full council meeting to have the change enshrined in official Town Hall communications policy.
The motion, drawn up by councillors Keith Sedgwick and Lulu Mitchell, says there is concern that Christmas as a religious festival has been “airbrushed” out of history.
It adds: “The ethical foundation of our legal and political system is rooted in Christianity and [the council] should not be ashamed to acknowledge that we are a Christian nation. After all, how is one supposed to respect any other culture, when one doesn’t treasure their own.”
The motion occupies last place on the agenda.
