Improving Town is a top priority
• I FEAR your reader has been misinformed about who is responsible for repairing the site damaged by the Camden Town fire in February (Shock view of market’s devastation, Letters October 23).
The land is owned by Camden Market Holdings, not the council, and the only jurisdiction we have over the land is to consider any planning application they may submit for its redevelopment.
We will, of course, make sure their plans support the continued vitality, viability and character of the town centre, as detailed in the draft planning brief for the Hawley Wharf area (of which the fire-damaged site is only part).
The planning brief will provide guidance on what kinds of developments would be acceptable and we are currently asking residents for their views. Visit camden.gov.uk/ planning to have your say on the consultation.
Improving Camden Town for our residents and businesses is one of Camden Council’s top priorities and it goes much further than the site damaged by the fire.
Some of the funding under the Mayor of London’s rescue package was allocated to a marketing campaign to benefit all businesses and residents by encouraging visitors back to the area.
The campaign, developed with Camden Town Unlimited, puts Camden Town firmly back on the map as one of the top areas in London for shopping, entertainment, culture and business.
The campaign goes hand in hand with our plans on the ground to improve Camden Town’s street scene to make it safer and more attractive for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users. The results of our public consultation have been overwhelmingly positive and a recommendation to approve the plans is set to go to the executive in November.
Camden Town is one of the most vibrant, creative and exciting areas in London. Far from procrastinating, we are moving full steam ahead to make sure it remains so.
