Cllr Andrew Marshall
Slowdown to mean ‘tough choices’
RECESSION will be much worse than most people think and residents and the council must adjust to prevent businesses going to the wall, the Conservative councillor in charge of regeneration has warned.
The council’s deputy leader Cllr Andrew Marshall said an era of boom was over and Camden people needed to realise “how tough things are going to be”, while hinting that “nimby” opposition to business-oriented planning applications should stop.
He said: “There is still a mentality shift needed in politicians across parties and in council officers. “People have been used to a situation in which public spending and private investment have risen year after year. We need to recognise the fact that the businesses here are what create jobs. It can’t just all be about residents. We might all need to make tougher choices now.”
Cllr Marshall spoke after addressing full council on Monday on the authority’s preparedness for economic slowdown.
Although Camden has introduced no new measures specifically to deal with rising unemployment and home repossession, Cllr Marshall said existing employment schemes focused on the King’s Cross development and newly housed residents gave the borough a strong start.
