The main players in school row
CAMDEN COUNCIL:
Jointly run by Camden’s Liberal Democrat and Conservative parties, makes final decision on new school policy. Agreed deal with University College London in June 2007 over sponsorship of Camden’s first academy.
UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON:
One of world’s top ten universities Approached Camden Council in 2005 with academy in mind. Negotiations accelerated in 2006 before deal clinched in June 2007.
THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND:
Runs 147 ‘faith schools’ supported by the London Diocesan Board for Schools. Chairman Tom Peryer first met Camden Council in 2006 and he appeared at several public meetings. Formal interest in becoming a sponsor made in January 2007, but not followed up.
ABSOLUTE RETURN FOR KIDS (Ark) :
International charity which raises funds through ‘hedge- fund’ investments. Runs six academies in London including the King Solomon Academy in Westminster. ‘Strong interest’ in running Camden academy was not followed up.
LEHMAN BROTHERS:
American banking giant, recently bought out by Barclays, offered £2 million donation to help UCL’s academy bid in June 2006. Donation offer later withdrawn.
THE JOHN LYON’S CHARITABLE TRUST
Education charity which runs two schools in Harrow. Replaced Lehman Brothers as potential £2 million’ donors. In August 2007, government ruled University sponsors of academies did not need £2million donation and Trust’s offer was no longer required.
