Tragic loss
• THE death of the South African singer Miriam Makeba is a tragedy for us all in civil society.
She was a cultural station whose irresistible charm and eloquence in music helped expose the inhumane “apartheid plague”.
South Africa is a much better society now, though a lot still needs to be done, especially in terms of redressing grievances, redistribution of income, alleviating poverty and, of course, violent crime.
Miriam Makeba’s death, although untimely, was not in vain. She died after performing a concert in aid of Roberto Saviano, an Italian writer in hiding from the Mafia, following his popular book that has exposed the mob’s violence in Italian society.
May her soul rest in peace.
