Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 13 November 2008

All decent people have been waiting for someone like Obama

• WHAT a great week for Black history.
A black US President and a black Formula 1 champion.
Both are men who have got there through talent and determination. The people of the USA and Britain can also be proud of the part they played in helping these men on the road to victory.
I knew from the moment I first heard Barack Obama speak four years ago that this amazing man was destined to be leader of the free world. My belief was reaffirmed when I had the privilege of meeting him and his wonderful wife in Chicago, just hours after he announced his intention of running for president early last year in Springfield, Illinois.
I have no doubt that Obama will be one of the greatest presidents in US history. However, this will only happen if he is able to mobilise all good people across the world to his mission to end extreme poverty, needless conflicts, irrational hatred, preventable diseases, child labour and environmental abuse.
The world is today broken in so many parts. More than 10 million of our children are living on the streets; many surviving through prostitution and slave labour. Millions of our fellow brothers and sisters are suffering in extreme poverty and dying of preventable diseases and in pointless wars and conflict which only serve to make a few people richer and more powerful.
All decent people of the world have had enough of this madness and want out. They have been waiting for someone like Obama to come to rescue the world from those who have helped break it. However, Obama is not God! He cannot repair the broken parts of our world alone.
We have to give him a helping hand, by making the small sacrifices needed to bring about the changes the vast majority of the world want to see. Changing the world has to start in our own hearts. Every small step to make a difference is, together, a giant leap towards bringing about the change all decent citizens of the world deserve.
