Controversial UCLH polyclinic plan scrapped

HEALTH chiefs have scrapped controversial plans to open a polyclinic in the University College London Hospital, it emerged late last night (Wednesday).
The Camden Primary Care Trust announced discussions to open a super-sized clinic inside the Bloomsbury hospital had been terminated.
A spokeswoman said: “There has now been joint agreement that we will no longer pursue the option of locating polyclinic services at the UCLH site.”
The original plan was to invite four Bloomsbury practices to form a “super surgery” in the basement of the new Elizabeth Garrett Anderson building in Huntley Street.
But a major campaign was launched amid fears that the elderly would have further to walk and that private sector companies would end up running the polyclinic. Doctors in Bloomsbury surgeries will now avoid being moved.
The PCT, however, remains, determined to shake-up primary care in Bloomsbury.
It has announced new plans to open an “Urgent Care Centre” (UCC) alongside Accident and Emergency in the main UCLH building.
Patients arriving at the hospital with less serious injuries such as sore throats and flu-like symptoms will be treated by doctors in the UCC.
