Escala wowed St Pancras as part of the anniversary celebration

Destination station: Escala lead the way in St Pancras celebrations

FIRST birthday celebrations for St Pancras International station got off to an electric start on Thursday with a one-off gig by the Britain’s Got Talent stars, Escala.
More than 500 people packed the upper concourse to see the all-female classical string quartet launch Unforgettable, a nine-day free music festival in honour of the revamped £800million landmark station.
St Pancras was opened with great fanfare exactly one year ago by Her Royal Highness The Queen at a star-studded light and sound show with 1,000 VIP guests.
Response to the refurbished station, complete with top-flight restaurants and an up-market shopping concourse, has been overwhelming.
Since last November, 33 million people have travelled through the station and the Eurostar trains have travelled four million miles – enough to go to the Moon and back eight times.
To mark the first anniversary of the “destination station”, some of the UK’s leading classical and jazz musicians are performing free of charge in the enormous, Grade I-listed Barlow Trainshed.
Following a weekend of opera courtesy of Janet Mooney and Edward Hands, wartime band numbers and poetry readings, visitors can still catch jazz sensation
Lee Gibson in a series of evening recitals that finish tomorrow (Friday).
Dominique Didinal, from St Pancras International, said the station’s restoration had been “unparalleled in its scale and ambition”, adding: “This is a station like no other – a Great British success story that has really come into its own over the last year. People now see St Pancras International as a destination in its own right – an iconic landmark and a symbol of pride for London and the UK.”
