Mixed fortunes: Islington Boxing Club's Carlos Moreno, Darren Ballinger and Akram Ibrahim at the ABA Championships
Mixed fortunes: Islington Boxing Club’s Carlos Moreno, Darren Ballinger and Akram Ibrahim at the ABA Championships
Darren’s knock-out is pure dynamite

DYNAMITE Darren Ballinger was crowned king of the ring on Thursday after he sensationally knocked out his opponent in the Senior Novice Championships held at the Hayes Working Men’s Club.
Competing in the ‘A’ class north west division, the highly-rated lightweight pulled out a power punch in the final round of his closely-fought contest against Andrew Joicey of Dale Youth ABC.
Ballinger, who lives in Highbury, countered well in the opening round before exchanging a series of heavy blows with Joicey in the second.
In the third and final round, the hard-hitting 25-year-old exploded into life with a terrific straight right, which left his opponent clinging to the canvas.
Ballinger returns to the ring on Sunday when he competes in the London semi-finals at the York Hall in Bethnal Green.
Club-mate Akram Ibrahim just missed out on glory in his welterweight final against Finchley’s Norris Thompson. Ibrahim, who lives in Holloway, went into the bout in confident mood having out-pointed Keith Dyer of Times ABC in the semi-finals, which were also held on Thursday.
But a second fight on the night proved a stretch too far for Ibrahim, who was narrowly outscored over three two-minute rounds.
The show also saw Islington Boxing Club’s Garv Krasniqi take on James Duffy of Finchley ABC.
Despite conceding both height and reach, Krasniqi, who lives in Kentish Town, put in a spirited performance in his first outing in the light-heavyweight division.
In the end, the step up in weight proved costly for the talented 18-year-old as Duffy triumphed with a points win.
The only other result saw Islington’s Carlos Moreno lose out on points against former junior star George Kean of Times ABC in the ‘B’ class light-welterweight contest, which was held over four two-minute rounds.
