Call for festive lights funding help
CHRISTMAS lights are being flicked on across the borough this week as traders hope to lift the high street gloom.
The Highgate High Street lights are being switched on this Friday by EastEnders actor Cliff Parisi who plays garage mechanic Minty in the BBC soap. Other shopping areas with festive illuminations include Hampstead Village, South End Green, Kentish Town Road and England’s Lane.
But with little help coming from the Town Hall to fund festive lighting, trading associations say they are feeling the pinch of brightening up our streets throughout December.
Chris Underhill, chairman of the Highgate Business Association, who organise the lights, said: “We are trying to raise some donations towards the lights. We asked Camden a few years ago and they did not want to help. Haringey have supported the lights each year.”
The overall cost of the lights is between £7,000 and £8,000.
Mr Underhill added; “We get help from the Highgate Society and businesses but it is more expensive than you would think. This year we have had difficulty raising the funds so we hope to get donations from people who like the look of the lights.”
The Highgate Christmas lights switch-on takes place at 4.30pm on Friday on the corner of Pond Street and Highgate High Street.
