Post offices’ future may be safe
HOLBORN and St Pancras MP Frank Dobson believes the future of Camden’s post offices may be safeguarded by a government decision to keep using the branches to pay out pensions and other benefits. In June, Camden lost four offices despite a massive public campaign to keep them open, and there have been fears among customers that others could follow.
But the government this week told the Post Office they will continue to use the service’s card accounts to issue benefit payments – giving stricken branches a much-needed fillip.
Mr Dobson said: “I am pressing the government to take the opportunity created by the present global banking crisis to promote a secure and universal banking service through the post office. “I also believe that the tried and trusted Post Office should also extend its activities to provide comprehensive financial services including insurance and mortgages. “We should build on the strengths and reputation of this excellent public service.”
The fears that the closure of branches in Camden would hit other businesses have come true in South End Green, where the former post office still lies empty, nearly six months after it closed.
