Wenger’s young guns misfire
Champions League
FC Porto 2, Arsenal 0
ARSENE Wenger may live to regret fielding a weakened team in the Champions League last night (Wednesday). The two-nil defeat to Portuguese champions Porto means the Gunners are likely to face a
European giant in the knockout stages, with Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich
lurking ominously in the draw scheduled for December 19.
Wenger rested several players and the young team struggled despite showing early signs of promise in the first half.
Porto piled on the
pressure before the break and deservedly took the lead when Bruno Alves rose unchallenged to head home on 39 minutes.
Emmanuel Eboue – booed on Saturday against Wigan Athletic – had a good game, but sadly it was him who played Porto’s Lopez onside, allowing the him to fire past Almunia and seal the win.
