‘Dynamite Kid’ loses on points
DYNAMITE Darren Ballinger’s fuse was blown out on Sunday when he was narrowly beaten on points by Middlesbrough’s John Green in the final of the Senior Novice Championships. Competing in the ‘A Class’ lightweight division, the talented 25-year-old started brightly and threw the cleaner punches to take a narrow lead in the opening round.
Ballinger (right), who trains at Islington Boxing Club, continued to pick his punches well in the second and would have been disappointed to be given just a one point advantage going into the final round.
The Dynamite Kid knew he needed to maintain his tempo and more than played his part in a pulsating final three minutes. Both men worked themselves to near exhaustion and when the bell finally signalled the end of another hard-fought match, Ballinger was confident he had done enough to take the title.
But the judges’ decision proved a controversial one as Green was crowned king with a dubious 7-4 points victory.
