Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 8 January 2009

Hope for the jobless

I AM delighted to hear that the Prime Minister is seeking to set up a hi-tech apprenticeship plan, which he is spelling out to British industrial leaders to get thousands of apprenticeships created with the help of the government’s Train to Gain programme and backing of £1billion to create 100,000 jobs.
I have been discussing the desperate need to set up a Camden-wide apprenticeship scheme for Camden youth with the council officers and councillors. Some positive action has since taken place.
I would now ask the powers to be on Camden Council to seek some of that £1billion government funding offered by Gordon Brown towards the cost of vastly increasing whatever plans they are for apprenticeships in the borough.
The council should now work closely with Camden employers on this and commence talks instantly with the government and keep all of us in Camden – particularly young men and women – how matters develop.
We must also involve the Camden Youth Council and those of us councillors who represent wards where unemployment and poverty is high.
I look forward to the response of the council leadership and the executive member responsible for this area of concern.
My thanks to Councillor Janet Grauberg for her help and support on this to date.
ROGER ROBINSON
Councillor,
St Pancras and Somers Town Ward
