Council to consider barriers in the battle against traffic

GATES blocking off quiet streets in Dartmouth Park could be installed after the Town Hall said they were considering the road layouts of the Victorian enclave by Parliament Hill Fields.
Traffic officers are meeting this month to discuss ways of stopping traffic using the roads in the area during rush hour to get from Highgate to Kentish Town, and one of the ideas mooted is barriers across streets including Woodsome Road and Croftdown Road.
A council spokesman said: “We are looking to see if any improvements can be made to ease heavy traffic through some of the narrow streets of Dartmouth Park following ongoing concern from residents.”
But the chairman of the Dartmouth Park Conservation Area Advisory Committee Stephen Benson said he felt the roads were quiet and the current system worked well.
He said: “You cannot stop traffic completely – people will always want to get from Dartmouth Park Hill to Highgate Road.”
He added the committee would discuss the issue at their next meeting, but said the group had felt in the past that it was not their place to take an active role in traffic issues.
